The 2026 flu jab guide: who, when and why
Flu hits the UK every winter. Here's who qualifies for a free NHS jab, when to get yours, and what to expect afterwards.

Every autumn we get the same question: do I really need a flu jab this year? For most people the answer is yes - flu is far more serious than a heavy cold, and the vaccine is the single best way to protect yourself and the people around you.
Who is eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine?
- Adults aged 65 and over
- Pregnant women
- Carers and frontline health workers
- Adults with long-term conditions (diabetes, asthma, heart disease)
- Children aged 2–3 and primary school age
When should I get it?
Ideally between September and early December, before flu starts circulating widely. The vaccine takes about two weeks to take full effect.
